Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I hire a college consultant?

Today’s college application process has become more complex than what it was when parents went through it. With the advent of the Common App, students are applying to many more schools than they ever did. In addition, colleges are eagerly seeking qualified international students as well. To navigate this landscape and take some of the stress out of the process, hiring an independent educational consultant can help in many ways. IECs bring their expertise to the table, they structure the process, keep your student on target for deadlines and requirements. They can also sift through the “hype” and help identify a college where your child can thrive and learn.

How is this a worthwhile investment, given how much I will have to pay for college as well?

Often the investment in hiring an IEC pays off when they identify a school that is a good fit for your child. Having your child thrive and learn at a college and finish in four years is a significant savings over the alternatives. In addition, IECs can point you in the direction of merit scholarships and financial aid alternatives that you may be unaware of. A college is an expensive proposition, but choosing the wrong college can end up being far more expensive.

How do I know there will be a fit between you and my child?

I do not decide to take on a student as a client without an in depth first consultation with them. This is complimentary, and separate from the meeting with the parents.

Can you “get” my child into his dream school?

Only your child can “get” themselves into their dream school.  No IEC can “get” a student into college. We can guide, advise and help in the process, but ultimately the work is that of the student.

Can you guarantee my student admission into college?

See answer to the question above.  There are many, many colleges out there; the vast majority of them accept over 75% of the students that apply. Barring extreme circumstances, your child will get into a college. There are simply no guarantees regarding getting accepted into the most highly selective of colleges.

My kid is simply not ready for this process. How can you help with this?

Part of my work entails a thorough analysis of a student’s college-readiness. Hearing about the process and what it entails from somebody other than a parent is sometimes all that is required. If that is the case, then we work on breaking the overall process down into manageable tasks with clear timetables and this helps crystallize what needs to be done.

In some cases, the student may, actually, not be ready for college. We can help guide you in the direction of gap programs, work opportunities, internships and other programs as needed.
